Salute to German Troops
A key group of Union soldiers who fought at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek were German immigrants. They joined the Union Army in large numbers to fight against slavery, to preserve the Union, and to prove their loyalty to their new homeland. Some barely spoke English. Fortunately for them their leader was a German schoolmaster from St. Louis named Franz Sigel. Many of these new Americans would see their first taste of battle under Sigel at Carthage, Missouri, then fight in the much larger battle at Wilson’s Creek.
